Abstract
Early reading skills are a crucial foundational skill for elementary school students, especially in the early grades. However, some first-grade students at SD Inpres Elelim still have difficulty recognizing letters, producing letter sounds, and reading simple words and sentences. This community service activity aims to improve students' reading skills by applying the phonics method. The phonics method is used because it helps students gradually understand the relationship between letters and sounds, thus facilitating the beginning reading process. The activities are carried out interactively and are student-centered to create a pleasant learning environment. The learning stages include letter recognition, pronouncing letter sounds, combining syllables, reading simple words, and reading short sentences. The results of the activity show an improvement in the reading skills of first-grade students at SD Inpres Elelim. Students are beginning to recognize letters, distinguish letter sounds, read syllables, and read simple words more fluently. Furthermore, students appear more active, confident, and enthusiastic in participating in reading lessons. The use of the phonics method and contextual learning media has a positive impact on student learning.
